Meadville KOA Campground is a Founder’s and President’s Award-Winning KOA Campground serving camping families in Northwest Pennsylvania with excellence since 1978.
A one time fish hatchery, then award-winning Brookdale Family Campground is now a KOA Founder’s and President’s Award-winning KOA Campground, providing the very best of Northwestern PA Camping! Meadville KOA Campground has 63 acres to roam in a picturesque rural setting in Northwestern Pennsylvania, with a 2-acre lake, stocked fishing ponds, catch and release fishing, a creek, and hiking trail.
To know about Meadville KOA, you have to go way back in time to the McClemens family, who originally purchased the land from the Holland Land Company in 1893, and built a homestead and barn at the site in 1914, in an area known at that time as McClemen’s Flats.
In 1945, the Roae family purchased the property and turned the farm into an auction barn and built ponds for a fish hatchery, where they raised and sold flathead minnows for fishing in Pymatuning Lake. In 1978, they turned the auction barn and farm into Brookdale 1914 Campground, taking the name directly from the date on the old red barn and the brook that runs through the dale in which its located.
At one time, a large red barn with roller skating in the top of it served as the main building complex of the campground, until it burned down in 1984. The campers helped rebuild the main building, which now serves the campers and local community with a seasonal camp store & mini-mart. The building also houses a recreation hall, game room, restrooms and showers, and a laundry facility for campers.
Brookdale Campground was purchased by Tim & Robyn Chilson in October of 1999 and renamed Brookdale Family Campground. Brookdale Family Campground added 10 new full-hook-up, pull-thru 50 amp campsites for big rigs, free Wi-Fi to all the campsites, cable TV to all the full hookup campsites, a new camping cabin, two new deluxe lake-front cabins, and additional rental recreation with an 18 hole mini golf, a jumping pillow, and pedal karts.
In 2011, Brookdale Family Campground was invited to join Kampgrounds of America as Meadville KOA. Kampgrounds of America (KOA) is the largest and most recognized camping franchise in the world with 485 member campgrounds throughout the U.S. and Canada. Meadville KOA was honored to achieve both a Guest “A Rating” from Guest Reviews (GoCampingAmerica.com), and the KOA President’s Awards in 2011. They have achieved the KOA President’s Award ever since. In 2014, Meadville KOA also achieved the KOA Founder’s Award meeting the highest quality score from KOA inspectors, and highest customer review scores.
Meadville was settled in 1788, by David Mead and nine others. It’s prosperity can be linked to the rich farm lands of the French Creek Valley. Meadville was incorporated in 1823 as a borough and later as a City in 1866. It was designated the Crawford County seat in 1880. In 1988 Meadville celebrated its Bicentennial with many events and activities.
Today, Meadville is home to more than 13,000 full time residents. City, county and state government offices are conveniently located in the downtown business district. The City is also an active center for business, industry, education, the arts, recreation, service and tourism. Allegheny College and Edinboro University both have campuses located within City limits. The Academy Theatre showcases productions with local talent. The Meadville Area Recreation Complex provides year round activities for all ages. The historic Meadville Market House supplies locally grown produce and products, year round. Crawford County is home to several highly ranked golf courses that can challenge any level player; the Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Event – held each Father’s Day Weekend; The Crawford County Fair, one of the largest agricultural fairs in PA, which is also known for its top-notch country entertainers; Thunder in The City – motorcycle rally and car show; Civil War Re-enactments by the PVI-150 Bucktails; and more.
